Hiding is used to make your character vanish from plain sight. It is useful for escaping combat. It can be a survival skill, or used for more sinister purposes. Most thieves will use this skill in combination with stealth, for surprise snatch and runs.
While hidden, almost any action will reveal you. It is possible to snoop backpacks however.
